Suddenly many parents have become full time teachers and entertainers too, and for an indefinite period of time due to the Coronavirus. Parents are worrying how to make their children's day happy, fun and exciting, but still learning despite the restrictions we have now been imposed. We decided to make it our mission to find unusual, fun but educational activities that the kids and the parent's can enjoy together.
I decided to divide it into 6 categories: Nature, Science, Cooking, Keep Fit, Art and finally History. We hope you find some of these activities fun and helpful and if you do, we would love to hear all about it! My very favourite was Explore.org in the Nature category. It took me longer to finish this Blog because I couldn't tear myself away from this site. It is just amazing!!!
Finally, at the very end of this blog we added a link to PBS who wrote a post which will help you have an informed talk with your kids about the Coronavirus with smart words and explanations that they can understand. We hope this will help you and them too.
NATURE
Explore.org
This was the best discovery I made whilst doing my research for this Blog. Explore.org is a Live nature network and the worlds largest virtual zoo, but with no bars to hold the animals in. It has Live Cams all over the world so you can discover so many incredible animals in their natural environments. You can watch polar bears, gorillas, the oceans and the animals that live in them, lots of different Live Cams in Africa, birds, even Great Danes training as service dogs, NASA Cams and even one for the Aurora Borealis! It is so full of inspiration and beauty. I was able to watch a mother polar bear and her two little cubs eating, Live! Explore.org's mission is to inspire lifelong learning and to make you fall in love with nature again. I think they found the way to do that!
SCIENCE
Edheads - Activate your mind
Edheads is an online educational resource that provides science and math games and activities that promote critical thinking.
Edheads partners with corporations, universities, and school systems throughout the United States, which helps them research, design, and test their activities every step of the way. These activities are great for both students and teachers, but Edheads has aslo been recognized by almost every major award on the Web for their excellent educational content!
Some of the great activities you can do are Aortic Aneurysm, Crash Scene Investigation, Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery, Stem Cell Heart Repair and Sickle Cell DNA to name just a few!
Family membership usually costs $20 per year, but Edheads are offering free membership until April 6th 2020 to help people get through the boredom of being confined at home during the Covid-19 epidemic. You can visit their website at:
COOKING
Chop Chop Cooking Club
You can join the Chop Chop Cooking Club for free! The idea is to get kids and parents to cook dinner together. It's a great time for kids to learn ow to cook and also so spend some quality time together. The Chop Chop Club will send you a new recipe to master which will not only give you something yummy to eat at the end of it, but also will arm your child with new skills for the kitchen. Once you have mastered the first challenge you can upload a photo of your meal and receive a virtual badge. Chop Chop will then send you new recipes with new challenges. Once you have mastered 13 challenges you are automatically entered to win a prize!
Keep Fit
The Body Coach with Joe Wicks
Feeling the need to move and stretch a bit? Had enough of sitting on a chair or couch? Try following Joe Wicks "The Body Coach". He is an English fitness coach, TV presenter and author. He is also known for his cooking books on eating healthy food that take only 15 minutes to prepare. You'll love his energy and London accent! Kids love him and he has devised for them over 18 workouts that last between 5 to 8 minutes each. They are all designed to be done at home in your living room. And the exercises are not just for the kids, they are also for the parents to join in too. Have fun getting healthy together!
Here is the link to his cooking channel on YouTube:
HISTORY
The Museum of the World
This is an interactive experience through time, continents and cultures, featuring some of the most fascinating objects in human history. The project is a partnership between the British Museum and Google Cultural Institute. For the first time ever, you can discover objects from the British Museum’s collection from prehistory to the present day using the most advanced WebGL (Web Graphics Library) technology available. Jump back in time to explore objects from across diverse cultures and listen to British Museum curators share their insights. Click to connect objects across time and space, and discover hidden links between then and now. Take a look around, explore and learn something new!
Art
Here is a fun art project that you can easily make with materials you would already have at home. It can be done by any age group too. I found this at Buggy and Buddy at https://buggyandbuddy.com which is written by Chelsey a former teacher and mother of two. She has many other inspiring projects for children of all ages, and many of the projects are also on video to follow even more easily. Enjoy and have fun!!
We hope you enjoyed our pick of fun but interesting things to do to keep you sane and your children happy over the next few weeks!
Finally, please follow this helpful link below to PBS, that will help you talk to your kids about the Coronavirus and what THEY can do to help and become super bug fighting heroes!
